Greetings,
The SHRM Foundation and SHRM Research, with funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), is conducting a quantitative workforce development survey throughout your State with a specific, but not exclusive, focus on businesses operating in coal-impacted communities.
We are inviting all employers in your State, regardless of SHRM membership status or location, to attend a 1-hour, free informational webinar about the research project.
Call to Action: Any employer regardless of either local or national SHRM membership status, is invited to learn more about and support this vital research effort by attending one of two identical webinars. We particularly encourage employers with a significant presence in communities impacted by the transformation of the coal industry to attend.
The webinar will be delivered twice, but the content will be the same. To register for one of the two dates, please select one of the links below. You must register in advance for the webinar; there is no fee to attend.
- Wednesday, April 10, 2024, from 2-3 pm ET/1-2 pm CT.
- Register in advance for this meeting (required) at this link
- Thursday, April 11, 2024, from 1-2 pm ET/12-1 pm CT.
- Register in advance for this meeting (required) at this link
The webinar will cover the purpose and objectives of the research project, the general questions the SHRM Foundation will be asking of employers, and the timelines for the survey, analysis, and sharing of results. All webinar and survey participants will receive a link to the final report. The first 1,000 individuals to complete the survey will receive a $7 Amazon gift card. Survey participants will also be entered to win one of twenty (20) available $25 Amazon gift cards.
About the Research and Project
Workforce development often focuses on talent preparation; however, employers must be empowered to hire, retain, and upskill workers effectively and must play a role that often extends far beyond the walls of the business. This is particularly true across the Appalachian region, where both talent and employers face unique challenges—and employers may have unique roles to play.
Through this research effort and subsequent efforts to support cohorts of employers across the region, we seek to:
- Empower employers as community pillars and share case studies of best practices,
- Understand and support strong collaboration between employers, local government, local education systems, and social services partners, and,
- Support employers to engage the full spectrum of talent, skills, aptitudes, and competencies among their local talent pools.
Your participation will help the SHRM Foundation showcase success stories, develop new tools and training, and partner with local employers to create lasting positive change in Appalachia's workforce.
If you have any questions before the session, please contact Clayton Lord, Director of Foundation Programs, at

We look forward to meeting you all and discussing the ARC research project!
